Analysing Use of Composition

Kalista Splash Art - Uknown League of Legends Artist

This piece of digital work is a great example of how following the lines created by the rule of thirds can create an engaging composition for the viewer.

The spear follows the main diagonal across the entire piece whilst the character is just to the right of the center, producing and interesting shape.

Nearly every part of the subject is following one of these lines, making for a very aesthetically pleasing composition.

The colours are dominantly dull greys, allowing the subject's bright blue body and weapons to become the focal point of the painting. There spear tip is light on dark where as the helmet is dark on light, contrasting the two areas.

The work also leads the eye very well, starting at the head, as people are drawn to faces, working down the arm to the hand, following down the spear, catching the end of the helmet feathers/hair and making its way round back to the face.

breathe - Loish

This composition is follows a much simpler template with most of the lines being vertical, creating a sense of structure and stability.

The painting is dominantly blues with the white areas becoming the focal points.

It mainly follows the cross composition, where more detail in involved above the middle line and all of the trees start fading out below the line, allowing the character to become the focal point in the lower half.

The character's head is almost directly on the line of the lowest quarter line, showing that the artist had considered that their composition would be based on quarters.

It leads the eye by starting at the brightest point of the piece at the top of the image, working its way down the most prominent tree on the right, reaching the light and following the shadow round to the character, up the body and past the air bubbles, then follows the trees back up to the brightest point once more.
