Basic Desk Lamp Model

Our first 3D modelling task was to create a basic model - a desk lamp. I chose my reference photo and began modelling in Maya.

- First I wanted to create the very bottom part of the base.
- I tried out a few ways of making this before figuring out which worked best. I tried flattening a sphere, rounding off a cube but found that beveling a short cylinder worked best.

- I then created what would connect to the stem of the lamp; I did this by creating another beveled cylinder, this time a bit taller.
- I deleted the faces of the base of this cylinder and a ring of faces of the base cylinder, combined the two objects and bridged these central edges together.
- I then deleted any unnecessary edges on the top of the base as it was a flat surface. and only required 1 polygon.

- For the base of the switch I decided to try a different technique, and extruded a ring of faces on top of the middle cylinder to create a very small basic shape that was still a part of the object.
- I then deleted any extra faces on the top of the middle cylinder as, again, it was a flat surface that didn't need extra polygons.
- Next I worked on the neck of the lamp. I created a simple cylinder and made it very thin and tall.
- I then created a non-linear bend under the Deform tab and adjusted it till it looked similar to the reference image.
- Then I deleted all history (by type) to get rid of the bend but it left the deformed cylinder.

- The next step was to create the pieces that connected the neck of the lamp to the head. I did this by creating a simple sphere and a simple cylinder, deleting the end faces off of each side, combining them and then bridging them.
- The other cylinder I could see on the reference image wasn't directly connected to the sphere, as if it had just been glued on, so I didn't bridge this one, along with the fact that I couldn't due to the angle that this next cylinder was at.
- I then combined this with the neck and bridged it to connect the two sections.
