First 3d model (2014)

Me and my group decided that to fit the brief we needed a few things to be included when designing our characters: the characters needed to fit in with the style of the Buzz Monster Rumble game so they needed to be a large head with arms and legs coming out of it rather than having a body; the limbs also needed to have knobbly knees and elbows like the characters from Monster Rumble; each character needed to be a colour from the BUZZ controller so that the player can easily identify which character is theirs; they all needed to have a unique shape and emotion to match their colour to make each of their personalities and back-stories different. With each of these considered, I created a mood board for a sad, blue alien character.

Below are three early sketches of my character; in the first one he was more droplet shaped than the second but I wanted him to be more unique as he was supposed to be an alien. It also shows the character having little gloves and shoes, but I decided against them as I felt that he didn’t need them to be appealing. Another difference between the two is that the second sketch actually has eyelids to express emotion rather than eyebrows, which I felt suited the style I was aiming for more. In the second sketch the character had a longer nose, which I felt made the character look a lot meaner so I got rid of it; it also shows the overhanging droplet over his face which I then kept in the final design. A problem I had with both of these sketches was that the arms and legs did not have knobbly knees or elbows, so I added those to the third coloured drawing.

It shows everything that I wanted in my final design:
⦁    Overhanging droplet
⦁    Rounded eyes with eyelids
⦁    Knobbly knees and elbows
⦁    Relatively large hands and feet
⦁    Blue
⦁    Very sad
⦁    Tear drop shaped
⦁    A large head – no body

From these sketches I was able to draw up a model sheet; this was my first time creating a model sheet so the proportions and sizes are slightly off. I also created a digital drawing of the front view in a basic drawing software and drawing tablet.

Using the model sheet I was able to model my alien in Maya and assigned a blue blinn to give the shiny blue look I was after. For my first attempt at 3D modelling I was pretty happy with the results.
